Abstract

This article analyzes the cobijada costume in Vejer de la Frontera, aiming to explain its process of resignification from a functional garment to a symbol of collective identity. The spatial scope focuses on Vejer, with comparative references to Tarifa, the Canary Islands, and Lima; the chronological framework spans from the 13th century to the present day. The methodology employs bibliographic analysis, semi-structured interviews, oral sources, and a SWOT analysis. The sample highlights the morphological evolution of the black manto y saya (cloak and skirt). The results confirm that the costume is not of Islamic origin, but rather a Castilian survival that persisted due to geographic isolation. Regarding limitations, the study notes the scarcity of written information and the risk of losing oral knowledge. The value of this research lies in proposing preservation regulations to counter current commercialization. The conclusions emphasize that heritage allows for the acceptance of historically oppressive elements by transforming them into icons of pride and cultural continuity.
